Steve McCurry has travelled the world for over 20 years as a photojournalist, most notably for National Geographic magazine. This famous photograph of a young girl in a Afghani refugee camp appeared on the magazine’s cover during the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. It is widely acknowledged as one of the most recognized images in the world.

In 2002, McCurry returned to Pakistan and located the girl, who had returned to her native Afghanistan and was married and the mother of three daughters. After photographing her once more, McCurry offered her financial assistance for medical care and education for her family.
