Abbey Road (1969)

Iain MacMillan (1938-2006)

The Beatles were the biggest music band in the history of rock and roll. Their music and lyrics captured the finest, and simplest nuances of what it means to be young and in love. This photograph for the cover of their final album together drove fans mad with speculation on its hidden meanings.

As the 1960s progressed through the sometimes violent upheavals that accompanied the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement in the U.S., the Beatles’ music grew more sophisticated, introspective and mature and remains for many the soundtrack of a generation.
